Almabtrieb Reith im Alpbachtal – experience tradition up close
Every year in September, picturesque Reith im Alpbachtal becomes the backdrop for one of the largest and most authentic cattle drives in Tyrol. This centuries-old tradition marks the festive end of the mountain summer and is accompanied by an atmospheric festival.
On September 20 and 27, 2025, the festival starts with a concert in the square at 10 in the morning. Afterwards, the farmers’ market opens, where many small stalls and traditional crafts from Tyrol are on display and you can enjoy local specialties. Throughout the village, small music stages and live performances provide the best entertainment – from lively Tyrolean folk music to rousing “Goasslschnalzern”. From 12 noon, things get particularly festive: the magnificently decorated cows return to the village after a long march from the mountain pastures. Here in Reith im Alpbachtal, the cattle drive still takes place in the traditional way: The farmers accompany their animals on foot into the valley, where the entire village community celebrates this unique spectacle.
